About Me

My photo
James Russell
Bristol, United Kingdom
I'm the curator of 'Tirzah Garwood: Beyond Ravilious', which runs at Dulwich Picture Gallery from November 2024 to May 2025. I've been a fan of Garwood's uncanny paintings and collages, sharp-eyed wood engravings and decorative marbled papers for many years, and was able to feature a selection in the 2018 exhibition 'In Relation: Nine Couples who Transformed Modern British Art' at RWA Bristol. The Dulwich show is my third for them, following previous exhibitions devoted to Eric Ravilious (2015) and Edward Bawden (2018). Garwood's work is probably less familiar, and I can't wait for people to see it! For previous books and exhibitions please see the appropriate pages. Likewise currently available lectures.

Some Comments on my Books:

‘Ravilious’s watercolour landscapes of the South Downs … are beautifully reproduced here alongside insightful essays…’ (London Review of Books, Jan 2010)

‘James Russell’s writing has the clarity and concision of the paintings, and is both properly informative and enjoyably readable... Glorious.’ (Andrew Lambirth, The Art Newspaper, Sept 2010)

‘Alluring… convivial…’(Paul Laity, The Guardian, May 2011)

'Russell s commentaries on the individual exhibits are engaging, entertaining and enlightening. His introduction is compelling and refreshingly direct, urging us to look closely but concluding, rightly, that there can be no correct interpretations of Ravilious, whose pictures still quiver with mysterious life.' (Richard Green, Burlington Magazine, May 2015)

'Excellent catalogue...' (Richard Dorment, The Daily Telegraph, March 2015)
